La historia del Renault Fuego probamos el mítico deportivo coupé de los 80 Coches Clásicos

The Renault Fuego ( Fire in Spanish) is a sport hatchback that was manufactured and marketed by Renault from 1980 to 1986, replacing the Renault 15 and 17 coupés of the 1970s. Marketed in the United States by American Motors Corporation (AMC), the Fuego was also assembled in several countries in South America, where production continued until 1992.

The Renault Fuego was launched at the Paris motor show in 1980, and looked like an exciting addition to the Capri/Manta market. It was described by Renault as an 'open plan' coupe - a boring description for the R18 four-seater car. It was aerodynamic too, with a drag co-efficient of 0.347, a class-leading figure in 1980.

Based on the chassis of the Renault 18, the Fuego was designed to be a cheap sports coupe to compete with the likes of the Ford Capri and the Volkswagen Scirocco. It was available in both turbocharged and naturally aspirated versions. In Europe, it was the best-selling coupe from 1980 to 1982.

Add a 107 hp 1.6 turbo returning 30 mpg, and it sure starts to sound like a recipe for success, but Renault's quality problems and the disastrous AMC partnership introduced a year later made sure.

Fuego is Spanish for Fire, and Renault hoped the Renault Fuego, like the American Pontiac Fiero, would inflame customers desires in the 1980s. Its unique sty.

The Renault Fuego was a series of cars that was introduced for the 1981 model year. The Fuego, which means Fire in Spanish, was Renault's entry into the hot 80's market of sport hatchbacks.

The Fuego, oddly a car with a name rather than a number as standard practice at Renault, was a direct replacement for the R12-based 15/17 coupes of the 1970s. Originally, plans were a little more ambitious for the car - but economics dictated that it be based the circa-1978 R18 (sold in the U.S. as the 18i), just as its predecessors were based on the R12.

Renault Fuego, una coupé caliente e turbata

It was the fresh and exciting Golf GTI, Peugeot 205 GTi and indeed the Renault 5 Turbo that set the world on fire. The Fuego was launched with a mildly simmering 1.4-litre engine and a lukewarm 2.0-litre variant. With 64 and 112bhp respectively, they were hardly going to set pulses rating. Save this accolade for the 'oh-so-80s' Turbo.

The Fuego arrived in the US in 1982, in both conventional and then also as a turbo model. The naturally-aspirated 1647 cc SOHC four made 81 hp; the 1566 cc turbo version cranked out a mighty 107 hp. The Fuego's advertising invited one to enter "the turbo zone" and share the same technology that made Renault's F1 turbocharged racers so.

The 96bhp 1647cc and 110bhp 1995cc engines were more promising, but the Fuego that everyone covets today is the 132bhp turbocharged 1565cc engined model, complete with 'TURBO' decals, cross spoke.

The company's compact and economical Renault 5 model, launched in January 1972, was another success, anticipating the 1973 energy crisis.

Renault Fuego Sports Coupe Review

The Renault Fuego was the epitome of French avant-garde '80s design, a genuine four-seater coupe with oodles of charm and, in turbo form, plenty of oomph. Between 1980 and 1982 it was Europe's best-selling coupe, no mean feat given the competition, thanks in part to a striking, slippery shape that gave it bags of showroom appeal.
